World-famous hypermiler Wayne Gerdes took the new 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid for a spin... and wound up covering 2,300 miles (3,701 kilometres) with two full tanks of gas, achieving a remarkable 60 mpg (3.92 L/100 km) in the process.
Driving from San Diego, California to Jekyll Island, Georgia, Gerdes averaged better numbers than even Hyundai's official highway rating. He actually travelled 1,200 miles (1,931 km) on a single tank, while the Korean automaker claims a range of 700 miles (1,126 km).
“This demonstration shows how the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid can deliver extremely impressive fuel economy and range for drivers who value fuel savings,” said Gerdes. “This is the first time I’ve driven a car that 'does it right!”.
The 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid is powered by a 2.4L Theta II engine producing 169 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 156 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 rpm. The engine is mated to an electric motor that makes an additional 40.2 hp and 151.2 lb-ft of torque. Together, both units generate a total of 209 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque.
The Sonata Hybrid can also operate in EV-only mode at speeds of up to 62 mph (100 km/h). It's scheduled to arrive at Canadian dealerships later this month.
