General Motors has announced that the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 will start at $58,000 in Canada, making for amazing value when compared with the best performance cars on the planet. The war rages on!

Powered by a supercharged 6.2L V8 (580 hp, 556 lb-ft) that drives the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual or automatic gearbox, the Camaro ZL1 is said to deliver supercar levels of performance and technology for the price of a sports car.

Lots of standard features await future owners including a dual-mode exhaust system, Brembo brakes, the third generation of GM's Magnetic Ride advanced suspension system, as well as Performance Traction Management (first introduced on the Corvette ZR1).

Mine's better than yours

GM isn't shy to pit the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 against world-class athletes such as the Audi R8 GT and Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, especially when it comes to horsepower, torque, and pricing. The American leads the way in all three departments, giving the automaker plenty of bragging rights.

However, the real question is: Will the Camaro ZL1 get the better of its arch nemesis, the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500?

GM quickly points out that its latest and meanest muscle car boasts a rear differential cooler, an integrated engine- and transmission-oil cooler, and brake cooling ducts as standard equipment. With the 2013 GT500, these components are available as part of the Track Pack only.

GM wins a battle, sure, but will it manage to win the war? While Ford has yet to release pricing for its performance monster, we thought the following could help you find the answer:
