2014 Toyota Avalon Preview

Pros: Admittedly, Toyota did a bang-up job of redesigning the Avalon last year; what a looker! From a dynamic standpoint, it's also light-years away from its predecessor. Handling is excellent, the cabin is very quiet, and comfort abounds. What's more, hard plastics were replaced with soft-touch materials.

Cons: The dashboard still features oversized controls and buttons that compromise the modern look and feel of the Avalon interior. A hybrid variant would have been nice, or at least an all-wheel drive option.

2014 Toyota Avalon Price: Selection is made simple with only two trim levels on the Avalon menu for 2014 including the base XLE at $36,995 and the more upscale Limited at $39,050.

2014 Toyota Avalon Fuel Economy: Expect this large sedan to burn anywhere between 6.4L/100km (highway) and 9.9L/100km (city).

Improvements and Changes: None. After all, the Toyota Avalon was completely redesigned for 2013.

2014 Toyota Avalon Powertrain: Both Avalon models get a 3.5L DOHC V6 engine rated at 268 horsepower, along with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The latter offers a manual mode with paddle shifters.

Cargo Capacity: The accommodating trunk of the 2014 Toyota Avalon can swallow 453 litres worth of luggage for your long trips.

Safety: Standard features include stability and traction control, disc brakes with ABS, brake assist and electronic brake force distribution, as well as smart stop technology, which automatically cuts engine power and allows the brakes to take precedence over the accelerator when both pedals are pressed at the same time. Let's not forget the seven airbags, active front head restraints, and available Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.
