The 2027 Minis are beginning to arrive at Canadian dealerships, and heading the lineup is a new entry-level variant of the all-electric crossover. The Countryman SE ALL4 Elementary Edition sits priced at $49,990 as it does the limbo to get under the 50 grand cutoff for EV incentives offered by Ottawa. Mini had to chop 10 grand off the price of the next cheapest Countryman but it did it.
Indeed, by undercutting the regular model's $59,990 starting MSRP by $10,000, a Countryman qualifies for the federal government's Electric Vehicle Affordability Program (EVAP). The program requires a final transaction price under $50,000 to trigger incentives, which currently stand at $5,000 (it will drop to $4,000 on January 1, 2027).
Factoring in the rebate, Canadian buyers stand to save between $14,000 and $15,000 compared to standard Countryman trims like the Premier or Premier+.
Cable extra
How did Mini get there? For one, the automaker cleverly navigated the fine print of the EVAP rules, which exclude charging equipment costs from the threshold calculation. Which means that the Elementary Edition does not come with a charging cable or adapters as standard equipment; adding them costs an extra $500.
Not to worry, Mini says, the model’s core performance metrics remain unchanged. The Elementary Edition features the same dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain delivering 308 hp and 364 lb-ft of torque, powered by a 66.45 kWh battery (65.3 kWh usable capacity) providing an estimated range of 348 km.
Standard amenities are still generous, the Elementary retaining the panoramic glass roof, 9.4-inch circular touchscreen, heated front seats, heated steering wheel and a full suite of driver-assistance systems, including automated parking assist and adaptive LED headlights. Contrasting black roof treatments and 19-inch black wheels are also included.
Mini had to trim costs somewhere, though, and so we see some premium features removed. Gone are the power-adjustable front seats, manual adjustment now required, and sport bolstering is also thrown overboard. Joining it in the drink are the wireless smartphone charging pad, hands-free keyless entry, head-up display and Harman Kardon premium audio system, all eliminated.
Exterior paint options are restricted to four choices: British Racing Green, Midnight Black, Nanuq White and Melting Silver.
Not all buyers will agree with all of these omissions, but the value proposition is compelling just the same. The sub-$50,000 2027 Mini Countryman SE Elementary edition offers standard all-wheel drive and generous technology, and if you drive it enough you’ll quickly come out ahead for never having to pull up at the gas pump.
