Volvo is significantly boosting the electric range of its largest plug-in hybrid SUV. In its new T8 AWD Long Range variant, the 2028 XC90 will be able to travel up to 117 km. The equivalent version of the XC60, also revised for 2028 , will offer up to 126 km of electric range.
These preliminary figures are based on the EPA testing methodology in the United States. Volvo claims these will be the two plug-in hybrid vehicles offering the highest electric range on the American market. Final figures, as well as specific data for the Canadian market, remain to be confirmed.
A larger-capacity battery
The increased in range, which Volvo says more than doubles the range possible with the current plug-in hybrid versions, comes thanks mainly to a new, larger-capacity battery integrated into the floor. The automaker also adds a more powerful electric motor, though technical specs on that haven’t been detailed yet.
And of course, given this is a plug-in hybrid system, the gas engine remains for longer trips or when the battery is depleted. Note that both the XC60 and XC90 will continue to be offered with a mild-hybrid powertrain as well.
The variety in available powertrains and the work done to improve range reflect the importance of both models for the Swedish automaker. "The XC60 is our best-selling model of all time, while the XC90 marked the beginning of our journey into the premium segment," said Håkan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Cars.
For the rest, the XC90, which retains its seven-seat layout, now includes Google Gemini. The Bowers & Wilkins audio system remains available as an option.
Production of the new Volvo XC60 and XC90 T8 AWD Long Range is scheduled to begin in autumn 2026. First deliveries are expected in early 2027. Volvo has not yet announced pricing or lineup details for Canada.
