Michiel Langezaal, Wouter Robers and Lars Bech, three EV-lovin’ Dutchmen, decided to put a Nissan LEAF through its paces, to see if it could run for 24 hours using only quick-charge devices.
They realized during their experiment that the 100 % electric vehicle is actually quite nice to drive, but that charging times, even with the most powerful stations, make road trips rather inconvenient compared to gas-powered cars.
The trio travelled 1,254 km. That’s not much, considering that a 2011 Jetta TDI has a “potential” range of 1,200 km on a single tank.
It would be interesting to reproduce the experiment in Canada or the U.S., where the population isn’t necessarily favourable to the idea of EVs. We’d then have an excellent idea of the work needed to build an efficient network of charging stations, which would smooth the way of electric vehicles.
