Mazda recalls 1.2 million early-model cars in the U.S. Ignition switch may be at fault

By ,

Mazda is recalling 1.2 million cars and minivans built during the 1990s in the U.S. due to a possible faulty ignition switch, CTV reports. Affected models include:

  • 323 (1990-1996);
  • Protegé (1990-1996);
  • 626 (1993-1998);
  • 929 (1993-1995);
  • MX-6 (1993-1997);
  • MPV (1989-1998);
  • MX-3 (1992-1993).

Mazda says it put too much grease on electrical contact points in the switches during vehicle assembly. The grease can carbonize and reduce electrical insulation, causing electricity to flow between the points and make the switches overheat. This, of course, can generate smoke and possibly a fire.

The recall campaign will start in December. Information specific to Canada has yet to be announced.
