Writers' predictions for the best new cars of 2007 Nov 1, 2006
Now that 2007 AJAC winners have been announced for each category, let us look back and see how many our collaborators actually got right. The Automobile Journalists Association of Canada's results represent the views and assessments of more than 60 automobile journalists. These evaluations, in which we took part, were conducted in Niagara-on-the-lake, Ontario from October 25th to 27th.We ran a series of articles describing all the players in each category. Our journalists made their personal preferences known. We must remind our readers that the vehicles participating in this competition are all new 2007 models. In the Best New Small Car for 2007, under $18,000, I had chosen the Honda FIT LX . As it turns out, so did the majority of journalists.Nadine Filion had picked the Hyundai Elantra for Best New Small Car over $18,000. As a very close second pick, she had selected the Volkswagen Rabbit 2.5 . In the end, the Rabbit won the category for 2007. In the Best New Family Car in the $22,000 - $30,000 range, the Toyota Camry LE took home the honors. Mathieu St-Pierre had chosen the Nissan Altima, which came in second place. This time, Mathieu's pick was the right one. In the Best New Family Car over $30,000, the Toyota Camry Hybrid marched to the top of the podium. The Lexus ES 350 was chosen the Best New Luxury Car under $50,000 for 2007. It was also John LeBlanc's choice. Mark Hacking's choice also converged with its colleagues in the Best New Prestige Car, the Audi S8 . The Mazdaspeed3 was picked second by Mathieu closely behind the Volkswagen GTI. As it turns out, the Mazdaspeed3 won its category as the Best New Sports/ Performance Car under $50,000. I was convinced that the Audi RS4 was going to win as the Best New Sports / Performance Car over $50,000. In fact, the BMW 3-Series Coupe was chosen over the Audi RS4. I can certainly live with the majority's decision. Mark thought that the Eclipse would win by a nose over the Volkswagen Eos 2.0T in the Best New Convertible. According to the AJAC, the Volkswagen Eos won the category. Lesley Wimbush knows pick-ups and she was right on the money: the Chevrolet Avalanche is the best choice and wins this year's Best New Pickup Truck. The Best New SUV / CUV under $35,000 category was the busiest with a total of 9 participants. Nadine Filion's pick, the Mazda CX-7, was selected as the runner-up. The Toyota RAV4 V6 Sport was chosen as the category winner.
