Guy Smith grabbed the pole at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca (Monterey, CA), aboard his Mazda-powered Lola coupe, during Saturday qualifying of the ModSpace American Le Mans Monterey, according to ALMS's website.
Sitting beside the No.16 Oryx Dyson Mazda of Smith, Jay Cochran and Chris Dyson, is the sister car of Steven Kane and Humaid Al Masaood. Their 1min 14.621s lap time was over half a second shy of Smith's best time of 1min 13.927s.
Joey Hand and Dirk Müller, representing BMW RLL, took the pole in GT. Hand, aboard their BMW M3 GT, took the matter in his own hands. With a lap just under a full second quicker than their closest rivals, Oliver Gavin and Jan Magnussen (Corvette), he made sure his intentions are clear.
Chris Bouchut drove his brand new HPD ARX 01g to the pole in LMP2. Together with his Level 5 Motorsport teammate, he is breaking in a completely new car this weekend.
Canadian Kyle Marcelli was up to his usual standards in LMP Challenge. He beat Gunnar Jeannette (CORE Autosport) to the pole.
At the previous Mid-Ohio race, Jeroen Bleekemolen was forced to stop on the track to pick up one of his wheels that had parted company. This time, he went straight for the GT Challenge pole in his Black Swan Racing Porsche GT3 Cup car.
