The history of diesel engines is black, sooty, and smelly, and it's no secret. But like so many other areas of automotive technology, the advancements
made possible by science and technology have moved it to a whole new level. Derived from the TDI engine powering their R10 LeMans car, Audi has announced the introduction of a new six-litre V12 engine for its Q7 model. Using twin turbochargers, it creates 500 horsepower and 738 ft. -lbs. of torque.The new powerplant uses the world's first Bosch Common Rail system, which operates at up to 29,000 psi. Highly precise piezo-injectors help to create peak torque at just 1,750 RPM, while deep reserves of power are available in any situation. Power is delivered to all four wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission and Audi's Quattro system.Performance from the diesel powered car is on par with the worlds best sports sedans, with 0-60 in just 5.5 seconds on the way to an electronically restricted top speed of 155 mph.Coming to an Autobahn near you, the diesel powered Q7 represents track-tested technology that turns a new page for the German carmaker. Audi currently has no plans to bring the engine to North America.
