Canadian GP: Historic win for Robert Kubica and BMW

By ,

Young Formula 1 driver from Poland Robert Kubica clinched his maiden Grand Prix victory today on the Gilles Villeneuve circuit in Montreal at the Grand Prix of Canada. It was also a first win for the BMW-Sauber team.Ironically, BMW scored their very first win in F1 back in 1982 with Nelson Piquet (father) here on the same track in Montreal.Kubica's break came when Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen collided at the pit exit. During a caution period, when the Safety Car was on the track, the red light was flashing at the pit exit. Kubica and Raikkonen stopped their cars at the red light. Hamilton arrived quickly and braked too late to avoid crashing into the rear of the Ferrari, forcing him and Raikkonen to retire.Several drivers endured a difficult day because of the track that was breaking up. Fernando Alonso lost control of his Renault and retired on the spot.David Coulthard drove a strong race for Red Bull, finishing third. Results of the Canadian Grand Prix: Pos Driver Team Time 1.
