Car manufacturers buying their own domain names

By ,

Major car manufacturers have started making a name for themselves on the internet, literally. Some of them have paid up to $185,000 to buy their own domain.

Ford, GM, Chrysler and others have bought some 25 names ranging from .Chevy to .Ford; other examples include .Fiat and even .Datsun!

Ironically enough, General Motors did not apply for .GM, deciding instead to put the emphasis on other brands.

The ICANN (Internet Corp. Assigned Names and Numbers) has recorded upwards of 1,930 requests of domain names, of which 230 were disputed. The ICANN is adamant the new names will give manufacturers new ways, revolving around specific brands and products, of using internet.
