Toronto native P.J. Groenke won the first of two rounds of the Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship disputed this weekend in Mosport, Ontario.

Groenke, driving a VW Golf, won ahead of Ontario native Tom Kwok on Honda Civic and Quebec driver Michel Sallenbach on a Mini Cooper S JCW.

In the Super Touring division, Dean Fantin was leading the race without issues on his BMW 330i until he saw championship leader Richard Broake pass by him with only two laps to go in the race.

The third driver on the podium was probably as surprised as anyone. Starting from the back, Sasha Anis managed to get back to a third place finish and a much deserved celebration.

Tampa Bay Lightning hockey player Marc-Antoine Bergeron was also in Mosport this weekend to enjoy the guilty pleasures of race car driving. If his performance wasn’t memorable in the first round, he at least had fun on the track.

“I’m really happy I decided to come to Mosport. It gave me a chance to test the car and learn a little bit more about the track,” he said.

The second round, the 6th this season, is scheduled for Sunday afternoon, in Mosport.
