Dakar: Carlos Sainz wins 2010 edition

By ,

Carlos Sainz (Volkswagen) won his first Dakar Rally after the last stage from San Rafael to Buenos Aires, on Saturday.

Although he won this very last stage, Nasser Al-Attiyah (Volkswagen) could not completely close the gap from his teammate. The driver from Qatar led the Spaniard by 36 seconds, which was not enough to pass Sainz in the standing at the finish line. Al-Attiyah clinched second overall position, 2’12 behind Sainz.

Carlos Sainz won his first Dakar, one year after his big disapointment in 2009, when he had to retire from mechanical problems just before the end of the race, while he was leading.

It’s even a 1-2-3 for Volkswagen, with American driver Miller finishing third overall, ahead of Stephane Peterhansel’s BMW. The Frenchman took the lead in the early stages, but he lost a lot of time after a technical problem.

NASCAR driver Robby Gordon took 7th position in the final stage, and secured 8th place in the final standing.
