Detroit 2008: Mitsubishi displays stunning Concept-RA and Lancer Ralliart (video)

By ,

Clean diesel is going to hit the North American market in a big way in the coming months- though the majority of its presence will be seen in new SUV's and sedans. Mitsubishi has taken a different approach for the alternative fuel source, creating a sporty diesel-powered concept called the RA- which they presented to audiences at the NAIAS in Detroit earlier today.Combining passionate design, an exciting driving experience and a clean, efficient diesel powerplant is the RA's job. It features the same Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC) and Twin Clutch Sport Shift Transmission found in the high-performance Lancer Evolution model. S-AWC ensures safe and nimble handling, while the Twin Clutch gearbox handles shifting in fractions of a second while saving fuel. The buzz around the Mitsubishi stand wasn't so much about the RA's engine, but rather its striking, supercar-reminiscent styling. Low-slung and wide bodywork convey an unmistakable sense of connection with the road's surface. It's got a sleek, side profile, thinly-slit head and taillamps, and splitters in both front and rear. Large wheels and dual-exhaust help to set it off from any angle.

RA is driven by a new 2.2 litre 4-cylinder turbodiesel engine with dual cams and 16 valves. A variable geometry turbocharger and piezoelectric injectors running from a common-rail fuel system ensure smooth, broad power delivery and great mileage. Power is rated at 204 horsepower and fuel consumption at 50 miles per gallon. There are those who think diesel powered machines aren't the most exciting on the road, but the RA clearly begs to differ.Other car on display was the much anticipated Lancer Ralliart. With its 2-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that develops a more than sufficient  235 hp, this vehicle fits right between the GTS and the EVO X. Finaly a good match for the Subaru Impreza WRX.
