The war is on. Dodge, Chevrolet and Ford have done it before, and it's a new matchup this time as the big three scramble to create new powerful and polished diesel engines for their hard working customers. Its been a daunting task with the new emissions legislation in place, though the result benefits the consumer and the environment with the next generation of clean running, efficient diesel engines.

For 2007, a new 6.7 litre Cummins turbo-diesel is set to replace the old 5.9 litre unit. Many components are shared, but the 6.7 litre produces 350 horsepower and 650 pounds feet of torque at just 1500 rpm. Power is handled by a new six-speed automatic transmission that offers a wide spread of gear ratios and helps to increase economy. "The 2007 Dodge Ram Heavy Duty's new 6.7-liter Cummins turbo-diesel engine sets the performance standard with an outstanding combination of horsepower, torque, refinement and emissions-reducing technology," says Scott Kunselman, the Dodge Ram Chief Engineer. Its durable too- Chrysler says that the new engine can go 350,000 miles before a major overhaul which represents a 100,000 mile advantage over the competition.A class first, the 6.7 litre turbo diesel engine will offer an available engine exhaust brake, helping to reduce brake fade while towing and extending brake life by up to three times. The system can also aid in quickly heating the cabin on cold days. The engine will be available in Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 models in January.
