DTM: Bruno Spengler set another pole at Norisring

By ,

Bruno Spengler (C Class Mercedes) takes his fourth pole position out of five races at the Norisring, fifth round of the 2011 DTM championship.

The Canadian driver, who stands second in provisional classification, set another great performance on his favorite track, as he already won here in 2006 and 2007 and set the pole in 2007 and 2008.

Spengler leads a Mercedes trio, as his teammates Jamie Green and Gary Paffett will start just behind him on the starting grid for Sunday’s race. Mattias Ekström’s Audi reaches the top 4, just ahead of Ralf Schumacher’s C Class.

Championship leader Martin Tomczyk had a difficult beginning to his weekend, as he only set the 10th best performance in qualifying aboard his 2008-spec Audi A4.

It was also a difficult return for Mike Rockenfeller (Audi), back at the wheel of his Audi A4 after his huge crash at Le Mans 24 Hours, who takes only the 17th place in the session.

As usual, the gaps were very small on this short circuit, only 2.3 km long, which will be ran 82 times in Sunday’s race.

"So far so good, Spengler told to Auto123.com . It’s a great day for us, we just missed the fourth first ranks of the grid as Ekström was able to reach the top-4 just at the end of Q3.

"It’s always difficult here, the performances are very close, and everybody can set the pole position. The car was just fantastic, and I can thank my team for the terrific job they did again.

"Tomczyk starts from 10th, but that does not mean anything. I started myself from 12th spot in Austria, and I moved up to 4th at the finish.

"Anyway, I’m not focused on Tomczyk, I’m focused on my own qualifying, and on my own race. It would be great to win tomorrow, but it’s a long way."
