DTM: Canadian Bruno Spengler is fastest at the Nurburgring

Driving a C-Class Mercedes, Canadian Bruno Spengler set the fastest time in the first free practice session of the DTM race held at the Nurburgring.

Spengler, one of the four works HWA Mercedes drivers, set a quick time during the opening minutes of the session and then worked on his race set-up, doing long stints out on the race track in preparation for Sunday’s race. His time was then beaten by several Audi drivers.

Points standings’ leader Spengler, from Montebello, Quebec then went out again late in the session and set the fastest time, 0.129 second quicker than Martin Tomczyk, driving a Audi A4.

Third was Mike Rockenfeller in a Audi, followed by Markus Winkelhock (Audi), Alexandre Prémat (Audi), former Formula 1 driver David Coulthard (Mercedes) and Oliver Jarvis (Audi).

Jamie Green (Mercedes), second to Spengler in the standings, was 12th while Mattias Ekström (Audi), 3rd in the points, set the 11th fastest time.

Qualifying will be held Saturday afternoon and the 49-lap race will start Sunday afternoon.
