Martin Tomczyk (Audi) captured pole position in Spielberg, Austria, in a very wet qualifying session for the DTM race, while Bruno Spengler (Mercedes) had to be content with 12th place.
German Tomczyk, who drives a 2008-spec Audi A4, set the quickest lap in Q4 ahead of Audi driver Oliver Jarvis, Mercedes’ Ralf Schumacher’s C Class and the Audi of rookie Edoardo Mortara.
The rain forced the race officials to red flag the session in the first minutes of Q2. After a break, the cars went back on the track for an expanded Q3 session, but the rain got heavier a few minutes later.
Tomczyk, Jarvis, Mortara and Schumacher were able to make it to Q4, where Tomczyk emerged quickest and took pole position.
Canadian Bruno Spengler could only secure 12th place on the grid, after setting a promising 5th place in Q1.
"The race won’t be easy as I have to start from 12th position on the grid but all the cars are pretty tightly bunched together,” Spengler told Auto123.com.
“In such wet conditions, qualifying was a real lottery. Ufortunately I wasn’t among the winners. I’ll go all out in the race and do my best to secure maximum points...” he said.
