DTM: Ralf Schumacher quickest in the last day of testing in Valencia

By ,

Ralf Schumacher (Mercedes) set the best performance of the last day of collective test in Valencia.

The German driver finished the day just ahead of the young Spaniard Miguel Molina, who was already quickest on Friday.

Alexandre Prémat, who set the best performance on Wednesday, was third quickest on his Audi A4 2008 ahead of Oliver Jarvis’ Audi A4 2008.

Bruno Spengler was only 8th fastest on his 2009 C Class Mercedes.

New DTM rules had a big impact on the performances of the cars in Valencia. In order to reduce costs, but also to prepare a brand new technical rule in 2011, the development of the cars has been frozen since September 2009.

The cars that will be ran in 2010 will be the same than last season. But the “old cars” (2008 specification) are lighters than last season.

That decision helped the 2008 cars that dominated the pre season tests in Valencia from Wednesday to Friday with Premat, Engel and Molina’s best performances.

Rookie Miguel Molina set one of the main performances of the collective tests, when he set the fastest lap on Friday aboard his 2008 Audi A4.

But David Coulthard also impressed on Wednesday, when he finished second quickest of the day, which was also the best Mercedes classification of the day.

Still, it is quite difficult to make a clear conclusion about who his fast, and who is not. Every driver had his own testing program, and the performances of the cars are difficult to compare.

Moreover, two of the 2010 title’s main pretenders, Gary Paffett and Paul Di Resta (Mercedes) were absent this week, due to their involvements in Formula 1 in Melbourne as third drivers for McLaren and Force India.
