EV Cup: Green racing in its way

By ,

EEVRC Ltd., a company based in the United Kingdom, is currently working on a whole new way of racing: eco friendly cars capable of reaching speeds up to 275 km/h.

The EV Cup is schedule to begin in 2011 and will have races in Great Britain, France and Germany. It will include four different categories and models: TH!NK, Lightning, Ginetta and GreenGT.

The TH!NK division will consist of single-make races of city focused, production vehicles. The car manufacturer Think will strip out versions of the Think City model expressively for this series. The cars can go up to 100km/h and run for 180km with a single charge.

The Lightening cars will be of the most powerful cars on track with a top speed of more than 130mph (210km/h) for 300km on a single charge. The cars go from 0-100km/h in less than 5 seconds and their batteries recharge in 10 minutes. The cars will be based on the Lightning GT Road cars made by the Lightning Car Company.

The Ginetta 650 Electric Vehicle, which is using 100% electric power, can run at 120mph for 250 miles on a full charge. These cars are double-seaters and have three batteries and motors delivering power directly to the rear wheels making it feel like a petrol-powered car.

As for the Green GT category, it will be open to non-production Electric Vehicles that have no weight and power restriction. Each prototype will be required to run five laps as this category will be based on time trials.

The Green GT is the first vehicle to be registered in this category. Its carbon composite FIA approved chassis has been designed to run in the 24hours Le Mans Series, can go up to 275km/h and does 0-100km in less than four seconds.

Next year will be one of public relations for the EV Cup series. There will be conferences in Monaco, Los Angeles and London. In 2011, several one-day appearances will be made as the series is expected to get rolling. Each day of racing will begin with the City EV series going up to the highest performing series.
