The Hispania Racing team has launched its challenger for the 2011 Formula 1 season in Barcelona, the Cosworth powered F111.
The new car, largely based on last year’s machine produced by Dallara, has been developed by Hispanis’s own group of engineers and designers under the technical leadership of Geoff Willis and Chief Designer Paul White.
After initial plans for the team to work in partnership with Toyota fell through, HRT has built its own new car in a project led by former Williams, BAR/Honda and Red Bull man Geoff Willis.
“Starting the programme to develop the F111 has been an enormous challenge,” said Geoff Willis.
“The group of engineers working from many separate locations had to produce the 2011 HRT chassis to meet the new regulations, package the Williams LG14 transmission, design all new rear suspension to suit and develop a complete aero package. Given the tight time frame, I am very impressed with the result and the enormous efforts everyone has put in to achieve the objective. However we have to be realistic in our expectations of performance; this is very much a baseline car which the team must develop in 2011.”
The car will be powered by the Cosworth V8 2400cc CA2011 and is fitted with Williams’ seven-speed “Quick-Shift” sequential semi-automatic gearbox.
This year’s drivers (for the moment…) are Narain Karthikeyan and Vitantonio Liuzzi.
