A United States-themed formula one team makes "no sense at all" without there being a grand prix in America, Sir Jackie Stewart insists.
Team USF1 , run by Peter Windsor and Ken Anderson and to be principally based in North Carolina's 'NASCAR country', submitted its official entry for the 2010 world championship on Friday.
But Scot Stewart, the famous triple world champion who is well known in the States for his commentating and long association with Ford, doubts the project can succeed while North America is completely absent from the F1 calendar.
"To have an American grand prix team without a grand prix in its own country, I'm sorry, that does not make commercial sense, or even common sense.
"So I think we have to have an American grand prix," Stewart, to turn 70 next month, told the New York Times.
He insists that America should be represented in formula one with a race.
"For this to be the largest commercial and intensely marketed nation in the world not to have a grand prix, with all the major carmakers in the world, the tyre maker in Bridgestone/Firestone, the fuel and oil producers -- for them not to have a grand prix, for me is nonsensical," said Stewart.
"It cannot be allowed to continue," he added.
