Fernando Alonso (Ferrari F138) was the fastest runner on the third day of Barcelona pre-season action, at the Circuit de Catalunya.
The two-time world champion, who lapped .285 seconds quicker than Nico Hulkenberg (Sauber C32), said he spent the day trying various things to better understand the new Pirelli tire .
With three straight days of testing now behind him, he will hand things over to teammate Felipe Massa for the fourth and final day of the test.
Romain Grosjean (Lotus E21) was third, and Nico Rosberg (Mercedes W04) fourth fastest.
The day marked the return to the cockpit of Adrian Sutil (Force India VJM06), the German who last drove a F1 car at the 2011 Brazilian Grand Prix. With his legal problems now apparently behind him, Sutil is eyeing the second Force India seat .
On the track, he pulled off the eighth fastest time, the same Paul di Resta managed the day before.
Mark Webber (Red Bull RB9) was a low ninth, but still some three seconds faster than Giedo van der Garde (Caterham CT03), who tailed the field.
