A historic day for the planet After many years of hesitation, it is last week, February the 16th 2005, that the Kyoto protocol has officially been made effective. What is the goal of this protocol? It's simply to make sure that we find ways to lower our greenhouse gas emissions to try and stabilize the effects of climate change. We now know that our planet is getting warmer because of our human activities and that we have to find ways to lower them. If greenhouse gas emissions are necessary to life on earth, we are now faced with the fact that we produce too much, which is what has created this imbalance. Is the human factor on global warming still contested? The answer is yes. But, these people are now totally marginalized. After more than 1500 well known scientists ( and half of the Nobel prize winners of the world ) have signed a letter recognizing that global warming was, without a doubt, a fact and that we were the main reason for this phenomenon, the NASA and the Pentagon added their voice to this concert, going against the present American government, who wanted them to deny it.So, now there is no doubt left, the planet is heating up, and it's due to us. What can we do then? If you come to visit this site, it may be because you are thinking of changing your car. If it's the case, your choice will have an impact on your level of greenhouse gas emissions. The Canadian government has decided to ask us to do our part by reducing our greenhouse gas emissions by on ton per person per year. So, if you drive a car that emits 10 tons of greenhouse gases a year, that you use this vehicle to transport your family of four and that you travel about 25,000 km/year, you could do your Canadian part by changing it for a car that emits 6 tons a year for the same mileage or by lowering your mileage. Here is a chart of most of the vehicles available on the market. We hope that by reading these results, you will be inspired to change for a more environmentally respectful car, when the time comes for you to change it.If your present vehicle is not on the list, you can calculate your level of greenhouse gas emissions like this: Each litre emits 2,4 kilos of Greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gas emissions guide of most of the vehicles on the market (N.B.: These calculations are based on the Natural Ressources Canada ratings of vehicle fuel consumption. If your driving habits make your results 20,30 or 40% higher than that of the chart, you will have to multiply these results by 1,2 , 1,3 or 1,4.) ACURA 10 000 km15 000 km 20 000 km25 000 km
