Fiat offers Canada 125 million for its Chrysler shares

By ,

Last Saturday, Fiat president and CEO Sergio Marchionne admitted he offered to buy the 1.7% Chrysler stake held by the governments of Canada and Ontario for 125 million.

The proposal has still not been accepted, as the Canadian authorities want to see how the 6.6% stock transfer in the US goes before making a decision.

Last week, the American government agreed to sell its entire stake in Chrysler (6.6%) for 500 million dollars, bringing Fiat’s holding up to 52%.

Marchionne also said he wanted to come to an agreement with the United Auto Workers health care trust, who owns 45.7% of the automaker’s shares. He believes that if such a deal were signed, then a Chrysler initial public offering would no longer be needed.
