Ford is continuing development of its upcoming midsize electric truck. Heavily camouflaged prototypes of the Fathom pickup were recently spotted on the streets of Las Vegas, Nevada, following hot-weather testing in the desert.
Ford President and CEO Jim Farley shared images and a video of the vehicles on the social network X. Said he, “Our team was doing hot weather testing in the desert with the new Ford Fathom and took a detour to Las Vegas to unveil its name. Our new midsize electric truck. Coming in 2027.”
Helpfully, the prototypes bore the Fathom name on their doors along with QR codes. Markings on the vehicle also spell out that pre-orders begin in 2027 and that the camouflage will be coming off at that time.
First model on a new platform
The Fathom will be the first vehicle built on Ford's new universal electric platform. Production is scheduled to begin in 2027 at the Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky.
According to the Detroit Free Press, Ford reportedly indicated to its dealers that five vehicles built on this architecture could eventually be produced at the Louisville plant. The automaker is notably counting on an assembly process featuring fewer parts in order to reduce manufacturing costs.
Practical dimensions
The Fathom will accommodate five occupants. Ford also promises an interior volume greater than that of a Toyota RAV4, despite featuring a truck bed and a front trunk. Bidirectional power capability, a digital key and compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also on the promise list.
All versions will be compatible with BlueCruise, the hands-free driving system for designated highways. Furthermore, Apple Maps will be directly integrated into the vehicle.
A starting price under $40,000 in Canada
In Canada, the Ford Fathom equipped with the standard-range battery will carry an announced starting price of $38,690. Note, however, that that total includes the $4,000 federal incentive available under the federal government’s Electric Vehicle Affordability Program. Taxes, options and certain additional fees are not included.
Ford hasn’t yet shared official range figures, but Ford Authority, a noted authority on all things Ford, reports that the extended-range version is targeting around 300 miles, or roughly 483 km. That estimate would not apply to the base model.
Pre-orders are set to begin in early 2027. The full presentation of the Fathom is expected ahead of its commercial launch.
