Ford Motor Company realizes that CO
2 emissions are the main cause of global warming and that automakers, oil companies, governments and consumers alike must all do their part. That's why Ford is working on the development of sustainable solutions that could be applied to millions of vehicles. The blue-oval manufacturer plans on producing a new generation of small-displacement turbocharged engines that would offer up to 20 percent better fuel economy without compromising performance.

Ford will also develop advanced technologies such as a 6-speed twin-clutch transmission and a new power-assisted steering. Furthermore, aluminum will be used in a growing number of applications to reduce weight. Biodiesel- and ethanol-powered engines will also be introduced. By 2012, 50 percent of all Ford vehicles will be motivated by flex-fuel powertrains. Diesel engines will become more widespread, too. The best-selling F-150, for instance, will be available with one. As for alternative technologies, Ford is looking further into hybrid drive systems, plug-in hybrids and hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicles.
