In an effort to become even greener, Ford told a number of suppliers assembled in Dearborn, Michigan, that it wants to equip some of its vehicles with biodegradable or fully recyclable headlights by 2020.
Ford is also looking for lighting units that can easily be integrated to current manufacturing techniques, and have a relatively high luminance-to-weight ratio.
One Italian manufacturer, Flos, already sells biodegradable lamps made of cane sugar-based bioplastic. The challenge would be to lower the cost for large-scale production.
