Garmin makes world of nav smaller

By ,

The world of GPS devices is a rather small one. There are a few major players, namely Tom-Tom and Garmin. Well, it seems Garmin is taking steps towards making itself top of the two-man pack for good with the latest acquisition of Navigon.

Navigon, originally a competitor for Garmin, never had the hardware Garmin did, but it had the technology. Known for pioneering free traffic information as well as “reality view” on their GPS models, Navigon moved out of the GPS limelight after releasing a few products that didn't fair too well on the market.

Garmin on the other hand has continued to make a name for itself in the portable GPS market, yet they haven't quite broken the “amazing” barrier with a lack of applications. The acquisition of Navigon could definitely help Garmin in this aren and more details will be given when the two develop a product portfolio that will include the 2011 holiday season and 2012.
