General Motors of Canada To Add Third Shift At Oshawa Car Assembly Plant

General Motors of Canada will add a third shiftof production to its Oshawa Car Assembly Plant, creating 1,000 jobs forcurrent GM Canada employees, Michael Grimaldi, President of GM Canada, andBuzz Hargrove, President of the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) union announcedtoday.

Grimaldi said, "The third shift is being added to meet the very strongNorth American demand for the Chevrolet Impala, the best-selling passenger carnameplate in Chevrolet history. In making this announcement, I want torecognize the hard work of Oshawa Car Plant employees. The Plant has earned areputation as one of the highest quality and most productive assembly plantsin North America."

Hargrove added, "This announcement is good news for CAW Local 222, whoare to be credited for negotiating the third shift agreement, and for other GM-CAW members. The third shift will add 1,000 jobs to the plant, enabling GM torecall employees in Oshawa and offer preferential hiring opportunities to CAWmembers at other GM locations. This truly demonstrates what working togetherto build a high quality product can achieve."
