GM recalls: Two engineers put on leave, cost of recalls explodes

By ,

General Motors president and CEO Mary Barra has put two engineers on a paid leave following the series of untimely recalls that have seriously hurt the automaker's reputation in recent weeks.

This comes after Barra spent two days before the U.S. Congress to shed light on the situation.

The fact that GM technicians were aware of the problems since 2001 and that no recall or sanction ensued within a reasonable amount of time really angered congressmen.

GM now plans to spend $1.7 billion as part of the recalls, more than double the $750 million it initially projected.
