General Motors executives took advantage of its second annual global briefing, a meeting with its investors, to give them a glimpse at their future plans. The Detroit News got hold of details in which we learned that the world's number one manufacturer wants to halve the number of platforms and engines used throughout its lineup.

According to them, 90% of GM vehicles will be based on 14 platforms by 2018. The challenge facing the company is huge, with about one third of its products sharing common ground at this time.

This decision would improve production efficiency by 40% and, ultimately, make GM more profitable.
