GM WILL OFFER VEHICLES UNIQUE TO CANADA

By ,

In an effort to provide Canadians with more and better choices of the types of vehicles they buy the most, GM of Canada is moving toward a lineup of vehicles that will differ more from the US lineup than it has in many years.

As a result, Canadians will be offered models that the Americans won't, and we won't get some that they do.

That's the word from Michael Grimaldi, the president of General Motors of Canada, who was charged six months ago when he took the top job here with increasing the Oshawa-based firm's market share and profitability.

Speaking in an interview at his Oshawa office, Grimaldi made it clear which segments the unique vehicles will serve, but declined to say exactly which new vehicles will be available to Canadians in the next couple of years and which ones won't.

"Without going into detail," he said, "we're going to have a mix they don't have in the U.S. We are currently re-evaluating our product portfolio, within the company and from different countries. We have affiliates, and there are opportunities to bring their products to Canada."

The intent, Grimaldi said, was to "evaluate our brands in the way we sell cars here. We're looking at content, size and price positioning."

From that, it seems certain that GM of Canada will add models in the compact and intermediate car segments, and probably add some extra variations to its full-size pickup and minivan offerings.
