On June 25-26 at the Google I/O conference in San Francisco, Google will unveil a new operating system to rival Apple's CarPlay, sources told Automotive News .
Known internally as Google Auto Link (GAL), the system is the first product to emerge from the Open Automotive Alliance, a Google-led consortium that also includes Audi, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, and chipmaker NVIDIA.
Apparently, GAL is not an embedded infotainment system, but rather a “projected” system. In other words, smartphones using Google’s Android operating system could be controlled via the car’s own controls and display screen.
No word yet on which vehicles will integrate GAL first.
