GP2 Asia: Jules Bianchi and Stefano Coletti win season openers in Abu Dhabi

By ,

Jules Bianchi and Stefano Coletti each won one of the opening rounds of the GP2 Asia season presented on the Abu Dhabi circuit this week-end.

Romain Grosjean had the fastest time in qualifying, but Jules Bianchi was able to move up to the front at the start of the race. The Lotus driver finally crossed the finish line ahead of Grosjean and Davide Valsecchi.

Dani Clos stalled on the grid when the green flag was waved, resulting in a big crash with following drivers Luis Razia and Pal Varhaug. The three drivers escaped unhurt.

Max Chilton had initially finished 8th in Race 1, which gave him the right to start from pole position for race 2. However, the Brit was penalised after the race for overtaking Stefano Coletti through a chicane. Coletti  therefore inherited the 8th place and, consequently, the pole for the second round.

The driver from Monaco was able to keep his position throughout the race, and clinched victory ahead of Joseph Kral et Marcus Ericsson.

Although he dropped down from 4th to 8th after a penalty, Jules Bianchi leads provisional classification ahead of Romain Grosjean (despite his retirement in the second round) and Davide Valsecchi.

The next two rounds will be presented in Bahrain.
