GP3: Canadian driver Robert Wickens takes championship lead

With a second and fourth place finish in Barcelona’s two rounds, Robert Wickens , from Toronto, Ontario, took a one-point lead over Saturday’s winner Pal Varhaug as the GP3 series heads to its third meeting point of the season, in Turkey.

With a reverse top-eight grid on Sunday, Wickens managed to come from seventh to fourth. With four laps to go, he got close enough to Mexican driver Esteban Gutierrez to make a move. When the door closed however, Wickens opted to secure his position.

“There are 30 ambitious drivers out there and this year you’ll have to take every opportunity you can to score. To secure the three points was important. To lead now is a strong start,” he said.

Alexander Rossi won the second race of the weekend in front of Lucas Foresti and Gutierrez, who had finished third on Saturday as well. The Mexican is now third in the standing with equal amount of points as Varhaug (10).
