Grand-Am: Decision to add B-Spec confirmed

By ,

Grand-Am deciders have followed suit with the B-Spec category.

There will now be three Grand-Am divisions: the Rolex series, the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge and the new B-Spec series.

Confirmed manufacturers in this entry-level racing adventure are Mazda, Honda, Ford, Mini and Kia. Each car maker will have to come up with an performance kit, including suspension, tires and wheels upgrades, for its respective subcompact model. Chassis and engines will be kept stock with only the addition of safety equipment permitted (and obligatory).

The target cost range is between $20,000 and $30,000.

"This new form of racing will attract new racers and in the process, new fans," said Grand-Am managing director of racing operations Mark Raffauf on the series' official website.

"The cars are cool and the competition will be door-to-door, which should be a lot of fun for everyone - a nice fit […]."

No licensed professional drivers will be allowed to take part in the races.
