Our friends at GM Inside News have just reported an interesting rumour. The automaker is said to consider a platform change for the next-generation Chevrolet Equinox, which would be based on the global Delta architecture – also used by the Chevrolet Cruze and Buick Verano.
Consumers around the world would get the same exact model, most likely smaller and about 300 to 400 pounds lighter than the current Equinox.
Right now, the compact SUV is sold as Equinox in North America and as Captiva in Europe, although the latter is nothing more than a clone of the late Saturn Vue.
While GM did not confirm the report, such a move would make sense. With continued gas hikes, potential buyers are increasingly turning to smaller, more efficient alternatives. Chevy's existing 2.4L engine would no doubt sip less fuel.
Downsizing the Equinox won't necessarily affect cargo room, either. The vehicle is longer overall and rides on a longer wheelbase than most competitors, allowing GM designers a substantial margin to develop a product that would directly rival the Hyundai Tucson, Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V.
