Indy 500: Patrick Carpentier in for Scott Speed

By ,

Patrick Carpentier , who last competed in the IZOD IndyCar Series in 2005, got behind the wheel of Scott Speed's No. 20 Dragon Racing car in the morning practice session in an attempt to find speed for Bump Day qualifications.

He reached 222.294 mph on Lap 19 of 24 before making contact with the SAFER Barrier in Turn 1 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Carpentier was checked and cleared by the INDYCAR medical staff. Dragon Racing's plans for qualifying were uncertain.

It is not yet clear whether Carpentier is being lined up to race for the team or just to assist with qualification, but he has taken Speed's #20 car out for this morning's hour-long practice session.

In 2005, while driving for the Red Bull Eddie Cheever team, he started 25th and finished 21st in his lone Indianapolis 500.
