The Australian, who has already won the road course championship not long ago, was able to get the best two-lap average to beat Ganassi's Graham Rahal to obtain his eigth pole of the season.
Canadian James Hinchcliffe (Newman/Haas) had another good run for his team by finishing third. Also impressive were Ed Carpenter (Sarah Fisher Racing) alway at ease on short ovals who finished fourth; the best result ever for his team owner.
JR Hildebrand (Panther Racing) was another frontrunner thru practice and qualifying earning the last top 5 spot.
Although his Ganassi team mate Scott Dixon finished 7th, Franchitti was never on pace and had to settle at the end of his two runs for a distant 11th.
Alex Tagliani wouldn't probably say it but he may have had a smile on his face as his ''replacement'' at Sam Schmidt Motorsports, Dan Wheldon, could not even take to the track for qualifying, his car having failed its technical inspection, therefore being force to start at the back.
