On October 13th, 1957, the infamous 1958 Ford Edsel made its public debut during a one-hour TV show hosted by Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Rosemary Clooney, Louis Armstrong and other celebrities.
The Edsel Show was specially created to promote the various models from the new Edsel series. Broadcast live for viewers on the east coast, it became the first CBS entertainment program to be recorded on videotape, allowing people in the western part of the country to watch it after it aired.
The Ford Edsel was available in 18 body styles and configurations, and offered many advanced technologies for the time, including steering wheel-mounted shift controls and a power-assisted trunk. Output ranged from 300 to 345 horsepower.
Unfortunately, the Ford Edsel enjoyed a very short life (three years) and cost the automaker millions of dollars. It remains one of the biggest commercial failures in automotive history.
