On October 21st, 1984, Austrian driver Niki Lauda won his third and final F1 title with a mere half-point lead over Alain Prost – the smallest winning margin in the series' history.
Born in 1949, Lauda started his career as a Formula 2 driver at March Racing in 1971. Hired by Ferrari in 1974, he won his first championship a year later.
Lauda miraculously escaped death in 1976 when his car crashed and burst into flames (his face was severely burned, though). Six weeks later, he returned to the track and finished in fourth place in Italy.
After winning his second F1 title in 1977, Niki Lauda announced his retirement in 1978. He came back for three years with McLaren, winning it all in 1984.
Since 2012, Lauda has been serving as non-executive chairman of the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team.
