The Alfa Romeo Brera, designed by Italdesign, took top spot in the Automotive News Concept Car of the Year awards on Wednesday evening at family publication AutoWeek's Design Forum, part of the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

The auto industry news publication's 5th annual awards honored the best concept vehicles unveiled at auto shows around the world in 2002. Criteria includes innovation, production feasibility, build cost and consumer value.

The panel of judges stated this year's competition was the closest in its five total years, with the Italdesign coupe beating GM's Hy-Wire concept by only one point. The 3-place Concept Car of the Year winner was the Renault Ellypse.

That said the Ellypse placed first in the Interior Concept category, with the Bertone SKF Novanta and Citroen C-Airdream close 2nd and 3rd finishers.
