Jeep is adding a Trailhawk version to the 2027 Cherokee lineup. The rougher and more tumble variant retains the model's hybrid powertrain, but gets several modifications designed to enhance its off-road capability. Most useful in that regard are a lifted suspension, underbody skid plates and a four-wheel-drive system with a low range.

Powertrain of the 2027 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk

The Cherokee Trailhawk uses a hybrid powertrain featuring a 1.6L turbocharged engine. Output is rated at 210 hp, while Jeep estimates combined fuel consumption at 7.5L/100 km. This fuel consumption figure remains a manufacturer estimate - official ratings are still to come.

The main mechanical distinction involves the Jeep Active Drive II system. It includes an electronic rear differential lock and a two-speed transfer case, allowing drivers to select a low range for more challenging terrain.

The low-range crawl ratio reduction is 2.92:1, with an overall crawl ratio reaching 37.5:1. In practice, this setup allows the vehicle to progress slowly over obstacles while providing increased torque.

The driver can also select from five drive modes: Auto, Sport, Snow, Sand/Mud and Rock.

With the optional towing package, towing capacity reaches 1,587 kg (3,500 lb).

Nearly 23 cm of ground clearance
The Trailhawk’s suspension is lifted by 2.5 cm compared to other Cherokee models. It also features specifically tuned springs and dampers, bringing ground clearance to nearly 23 cm.

Front and rear bumpers have been redesigned to improve approach and departure angles. Jeep announces an approach angle of 28.8 degrees and a departure angle of 31.8 degrees.

Steel skid plates cover the front axle, wiring and fuel tank, with additional protection provided for the hybrid battery. The variant is delivered with all-terrain tires sized 245/65R17.

To validate the modifications, engineers conducted testing at Sand Hollow and Moab, Utah, on courses mixing sand, rocks and steep inclines.
