The finalists for the 2011 North American Car of the Year (NACOTY) award to be presented at the upcoming Detroit auto show perfectly illustrate how times are quickly changing in the auto industry.
Two electric cars, including the Nissan LEAF and Chevrolet Volt , are among the last three contenders, marking a first in NACOTY history. And for the second year in a row, Hyundai will be represented as well, this time with the Sonata .
The Volt and LEAF were pretty obvious picks. The former has already been named Car of the Year by Motor Trend and Automobile as well as Green Car of the Year at the L.A. Auto Show, while the latter earned the title of European Car of the Year.
The winner will be selected by a jury of 49 journalists from Canada and the United States, who will also vote for the North American Truck of the Year (NACOTY). The short list of contenders includes the Dodge Durango, Ford Explorer and Jeep Grand Cherokee. All three have been completely redesigned for 2011 and praised by the media at various auto shows around the globe.
