One of the biggest head-turners on display at the recent Detroit auto show was to be found at the Lincoln stand. The Lincoln Continental with suicide doors had been announced in 2018 as a limited edition to mark the 80th anniversary of the luxury automaker.
Which meant, of course, a run of… 80 units. And every one of these has been snapped up, even with a $110,000 USD price tag attached. This by the way is the highest price tag ever affixed to a new Lincoln vehicle.
For sure, the limited production run helped drive interest in its own right, and for collectors the asking price was not a top consideration; they wanted to get their hands on one of them. There were no special requirements or asks for those who wanted to reserve their copy, beyond first come first served.

The positive reaction to the special edition of the Continental has led Lincoln to confirm a second production run, likely for the 2020 model-year.
Lincoln may want to seriously consider adopting this suicide-door Continental as a permanent member of its family – it looks sure to give new life to the model.
In the meantime, interested buyers will have to wait for the next special edition.
The assembly of the transformed special-edition Continentals requires pulling them from the regular production line, and handing them over to Boston-based coach manufacturer Cabot to make the changes. For one, the wheelbase must be extended by some six inches to accommodate the suicide-door configuration.
Lincoln has confirmed that if the wheelbase was permanently extended, it would allow for producing the model regularly in the new configuration.
We’ll see if Lincoln decides to go that route, but now at least the company knows how consumers feel about it.
