Los Angeles 2014: Ford introduces 2016 Explorer

By ,

The new 2016 Ford Explorer made its debut at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show today, offering a choice of three powertrains including:

  • 3.5L V6 mated to a 6-speed SelectShift transmission (base, XLT, Limited);
  • 2.3L 4-cylinder EcoBoost producing 270 horsepower at 300+ lb-ft of torque (optional on base Explorer, XLT, Limited);
  • 3.5L EcoBoost V6 rated at 365 horsepower and mated to a 6-speed SelectShift transmission with paddle shifters (Sport, Platinum).

“The new Explorer combines great looks, seating for seven and ready-for-anything capability – a proven formula that has made it an SUV icon,” said Joe Hinrichs, executive vice president and president, The Americas, Ford Motor Company. “From the very start in developing the sixth-generation model, we listened carefully to customers to really understand what they wanted in a new Explorer, and we responded with enhancements across the lineup, which now includes a premium Platinum series.”

Ford says the new Platinum series elevates the Explorer to a premium level, with real wood and brushed aluminum accents, Nirvana leather, multicontour seats, and an all-new 500-watt Sony audio system.

Pricing for the 2016 Ford Explorer will be announced later.

FYI, more than 7 million Explorers have been sold in the U.S. alone, 350,000 in Canada, and the vehicle is available in more than 100 markets across the globe.
