Lotus CEO claims 2013 Esprit trumps MP4-12C and 458 Italia

We've known for a while that Lotus has great ambitions for its revamped lineup, but now the company's plans get a bit clearer.

After kissing goodbye to Toyota's V6 and V8 engines, Lotus today claimed that its 2013 Esprit will trump the McLaren MP4-12-C and Ferrari 458 Italia. You don't say!

CEO Dany Bahar revealed that the rolling chassis was now complete and fully-running prototypes would be ready by November.

In the same breath, he took shots at some of the most prestigious sports car manufacturers, arguing that the Esprit will offer a more “authentic” driving experience than the aforementioned rivals.

He even dared to add that the Esprit will have “the character and emotion” that the McLaren lacks.

These statements are obviously a good way (and a successful one) to turn the media spotlight on Lotus, but they could just as well come back to haunt him. The company has been building hype around the car for a very long time and people's expectations are only going to get higher now.

Will the brand-new, 570-horsepower V8 and lightweight modular aluminum platform really make the Lotus Esprit better than the MP4-12C and 458 Italia? Hard to say. At least we have a great new idea for a future comparison test!
