The future of Maybach looks murkier than ever after talks of an alliance with Aston Martin broke down.
Auto123.com reported in June that the prestige brand would likely be abandoned by Daimler, which has grown tired of its lacklustre sales. The only real hope for Maybach lied in a partnership with Aston Martin for the development of a new model platform.
However, sources just told Auto Motor und Sport that discussions are on the "brink of extinction" because Aston Martin wants too much money to build future Maybach models.
As a result, the German automaker will apparently develop the next-generation Maybach internally – possibly as a sub-brand of Mercedes-Benz. That would signal the death of Maybach as we know it.
The initial goal was to sell 500 Maybach cars annually, but a mere 200 were delivered throughout 2010.
Meanwhile, Bentley and Rolls-Royce managed to find 1,430 and 512 takers, respectively, in the U.S. last year.
